Invertebrates

  • Identification of samples followed by calculation of required biotic indices such as WHPT, PSI, LIFE and CCI. Other data outputs available at request.

  • Full terrestrial and aquatic invertebrate surveys that meet the standards set out by Natural England.

  • Detailed assessment of a site's potential to support notable species/assemblages, with a pragmatic focus on retention, compensation and management.

An invertebrate scoping assessment might conclude that a full invertebrate survey is required and inform survey design. Alternatively, the assessment might conclude that just a targeted search for a single notable species is warranted, or no further invertebrate surveying is required, especially with appropriate habitat retention, compensation and/or site management commitments.

  • Design and delivery of species-focused invertebrate surveys and where required mitigation strategies.

For example: black hairstreak, noble chafer, necklace ground beetle, roman snail, grizzled skipper.

  • Desk-based “first impression” advice for sites at early stages of potential development or change in land use.

  • I’m always keen to support and develop the invertebrate skills of others, while able to deliver the above, equally happy supporting from varying distances.

  • Advice on scheme design, habitat retention, habitat creation and establishment, and long term site management (harmonising with other considerations such as BNG).

Planning and Scheme Design

  • UKHab Surveying (Habitat mapping)

  • Preliminary Ecological Appraisal (Phase 1)

  • Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG)

  • River Condition Assessment (MoRPh)

  • Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA)

  • Habitat Restoration and Management (HMMP)

  • Protected Species (see below)

  • Site Scoping

Protected & Priority Species

I have experience with protected and priority species including: amphibians (great crested newts), badgers, bats, birds, dormice, fish, invertebrates, otters, rare plants, reptiles (common lizard, slow worm, adder and grass snake) and water voles.

I am CSCS and EUSR carded, with plenty of experience as Ecological Clerk of Works, including supervising vegetation clearance teams on national infrastructure projects.

Ecologist Support

I can provide fixed fees for report reviews, BNG reviews and UKHab reviews. I also provide GIS support for habitat mapping, post-development River Condition Assessments and BNG.
